Stat Picnic

This was the coldest, windiest, and shortest Stat Department picnic I've ever been to. It was alright though. We had some burgers and hot dogs and other random foods brought by the people in the department. Thanks to Shannon and Newgen for grilling the meat (and 2 veggie burgers)!

By the end of the picnic, everyone left was huddled around the grill warming their hands. :)

Interveiwed

This weekend we played some hockey. I got damaged on the nose. I'm not really sure how. I have a full cage on my helmet...but it happened. I would show you a picture, but I look rather foolish in the ones I have, and really, it isn't anything impressive.

After St. Louis, I stayed the night in Kansas City for a Monday of interviews with Hallmark. The company paid for me to stay in 21st floor room at the Hyatt. This is the view of Kansas City from my room that night.

The interviews went fine. If you want to know about them, then give me a call and I'll chat it up with you. But I don't feel the need to give detail of my 7 hours of interviews here on my blog. I'm not that good at telling stories.

Now its just time to wait for the offers to start rolling in. And offers there will be!! We hope to hear from Hallmark in Kansas City, a software company in Tulsa, and/or the Stat Department here in Manhattan.

MSE

While walking around K-mart for the once-a-year Christmas trip, I happened to notice this box that gave me a smile.

In statistics, MSE (or mean squared error) is a common estimate of the population variance. It's not really all that special or all that funny. But it made me smile a little so I took a pic.

We're gonna rock down to...

School began on Monday. I have 3 classes. STAT 860: Linear Models I, STAT 725: Introduction to SAS programming, and STAT 716: Nonparametrics. Good times. 860 is going to be hard. The other two shouldn't be as bad. 725 only goes for 5 weeks. That is nice.

This is my book cover for 860. A clever name for a book indeed. Not to mention the author was one of the people interviewed for our department head.

STAT 100

I am teaching STAT 100 this summer. I've done 2 days so far. Yesterday, Day 1, took a grand total of 20 minutes. Geez. I have 60 minutes.

Today I made some fabulous slides and incorporated some activities and turned out a 55 minute class. Much more acceptable.

Open House

Today was the K-State Open House. We (Stat Department) had a table set up in the Union next to Anthropology and Biology and across from Mathematics. It was fine. I sat there for one of the 6 hours. We had a lame board and an old Monty Hall set up. The best part, everyone who worked got a shirt because Shannon and I made them for our department. Rock on.

This is Willie just after playing with one of the Biology department's snakes.
