Origin?

We, well I, used such words as parabola, hyperbola, and asymptote today in class. What does the word asymptote come from? What is its origin? :) origin

It comes from a Greek word, asumptotos, meaning "not intersecting" :D

I thought it was derived from symmetry, but they put the "a" in front of it to mean the opposite.
